This is beautifully textured techno from one of Detroit's "second wave" of producers following in the tradition of genre forebears Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. Like his fellow technicians, Larkins knows how to extract sumptuous siren cries from his arsenal of synths and hi-tech studio equipment, but unlike the previous Detroit triumvirate is unafraid to come up with saltier, more provocative rhythmpatterns and a more askew sonic architecture.
Hence, most of the tracks on AZIMUTH fail to conform to techno's rigidfour-four beat structure, with the exception of hardline pouncers like "Funk In Space" or "Doppler". Larkin enjoys wrestling new and unheard-of sounds from his machines, as witnessed on the beautiful sonic venture "My Travels", with its nearly ambient refrains, and the arresting fibrillations and squelches of the title track. Arresting stuff. |
