Italo-Disco artists were not generally known for producing well-rounded long players, preferring to work under a number of different aliases or projects to (presumably) ensure maximum sales. The Sphinx album is surely one of the exceptions, a solid lp with not a single dud. In fact every one of the five tracks here is an absolute bomb, no surprise considering it was recorded in the golden years of italo and features some of the genre’s best producers, most notably those behind Dharma’s “Plastic Doll” and the highly successful Kano project.
The highlight has to be the Sphinx cover of Cerrone’s “Love In C Minor” which although a ‘minor’ classic in itself, is absolutely thrashed by Pulga, Noè & Co’s version, which converts the orchestration of the original into deeply layered synthesizer grooves, bringing out the truly ecstatic nature of the piece.
Seriously, once this starts playing it’s near impossible not to get caught up in it, regardless of how many times you’ve heard it before.
