Like his fellow technicians, Larkins knows how to extract sumptuous siren cries from his arsenal of synths and hi-tech studio equipment, but unlike the previous Detroit triumvirate is unafraid to come up with saltier, more provocative rhythmpatterns and a more askew sonic architecture. Hence, most of the tracks on AZIMUTH fail to conform to techno's rigidfour-four beat structure, with the exception of hardline pouncers like "Funk In Space" or "Doppler". Larkin enjoys wrestling new and unheard-of sounds from his machines, as witnessed on the beautiful sonic venture "My Travels", with its nearly ambient refrains, and the arresting fibrillations and squelches of the title track.
